The Struggles of An Up & Coming Music Artist
Immediately after listening to a fire beat, you rush to put your pen to a piece of paper to create lyrics that would flow right into the beat. After years of creating great music for the culture, you are confident that this next masterpiece will be the song that will get you through the door, but intruding thoughts of failed attempts, closed doors and lack of finances to promote, brings a feeling of despair.
Social Media
“You just need that one video to go viral” as some people may express. Even though social media is one of the main tools to market your music and the ‘viral video’ strategy has worked for some artists, it doesn’t guarantee that it’ll work for every artist who’s trying to enter into the music industry. Building a social media presence is key but can be challenging for artists who display a unique talent, often struggling with gaining recognition due to the over saturation of music that only caters to a specific audience.
Lack of Money
“And action”!! It’s the day of the video shoot and you’re not excited as usual due to the repetitive visuals you’ve had for your previous singles. The lack of money to push the project you’ve been working on for months, can be frustrating. Studio time, video shoots, visuals, marketing, traveling, etc is costly for an artist who’s paying for those expenses on their own. All of these financial obstacles that artists face, could lead to negative thoughts that aren’t true.
Mental Health
“I’m not as talented as others” “I will never make it” “I’m not capable” are thoughts that could begin to flood the mind of an artist who’s been working hard for so long, producing great music but feel unseen with little to no funds. Those thoughts could lead to lack of motivation, depression, and even hopelessness. Don’t allow unhealthy thoughts to hinder you from moving forward with your music journey.
“KD coming up next to the stage '' as the DJ screams into the mic and the crowd goes crazy waiting to see their favorite music artists, could someday be you. All of the struggles that come with being an up and coming artist are challenging. However, it’s important to keep pursuing what you’re so passionate about. Your music is what makes you an unique artist but so does your journey. Even though you may not have a million followers with high engagement, the resources to do the dopest music videos, and the money to go on tour from state to state yet. You’re still successful because you get to wake up everyday and do something you love, which is create.
